Is my dog training my puppy for me?

Posted by: Admin | Comments (5)

I have a 2-year-old Cocker Spaniel and we just adopted a 10 week old puppy (border collie/lab who is already bigger than the cocker).

Anyway, we are crate training the puppy. We don’t yet have a crate for the puppy, so we are using the cocker’s crate and letting him be out at night and during the day (he is very well housetrained).

Last night, in the crate for the first time, the puppy (a border collie/lab mix who is already bigger than my cocker) was whining and yelping. We tried to ignore it, and then we tried to tell him no be quiet, but he just kept on for 5 minutes.

My cocker was sleeping next to me and ran over there a few times. Finally, he got down, laid under the bed near the crate, and issued a few low growls at the puppy. That puppy didn’t make one sound after that all night!

My dog just trained him to be quiet in the crate! Have you seen this before? Is that what he was doing? Has this got to do with being dominant or because we were upset?

we plan on crate training when he gets here. (he’s only 5 weeks and not ready to come home) but i was wondering if i could also use the puppy pads. or would that be too confusing?

I’m definitely going to crate train but I’m considering the pads also cause I know i can’t keep my eye on him 24-7. so if he does accidentally go i wanted to train him to go on the pads just in case. is that okay?

Help with puppy potty training?

Posted by: Admin | Comments (3)

I’m getting a 10 week old puppy (yay!) and i need to teach it how to go potty. What’s a good way to train him and how? I was thinking of teaching him how to use the wee wee pads because I’m going to start school soon and no one’s going to be home during those hours or is crate training better and what’s a good schedule i should follow like can someone show me an example.
Thanks :]

oh, and what are some good tips for a first time dog owner?

Have I ruined my puppies training?

Posted by: Admin | Comments (10)

I have a 16 wk old Maltese (learning crate training/play pen inside) & for the 1st weeks I was potty training him by taking him outside but where I live it rains a lot. Since he is so tiny (2 1/2 pounds) & close to the ground I couldn’t take him out for 2 weeks straight because he gets wet and then freezes inside. During that time I tried to do the pee pad training at least, which he gets right about 75% of the time now but I’m trying to get him to learn both & all he does outside is play! Have I ruined my chances of potty training him outside?

I also had a few days where I had to leave him during the day & now he is getting a little aggressive/suffering from bad habits he didn’t have before. Have I ruined my chances of having the sweet puppy I had at first?

I also tried taking him to two different Pet Smarts and both trainers couldn’t deal w/ such a small pup. I don’t have a lot of money for classes, do you have any suggestions to help me train him at home?
